HOW A MASTERCRAFTSMAN FOUND HIS CALLING
Artisans don’t choose their material. The material chooses the artisan. And this was how it was for Alberto Crocco. A pivotal moment in his young adult life would mould the future for the rising artist.
Alberto learned to work with his hands from a very young age, helping his father, an Italian stonemason who migrated to Australia. From building custom timber joinery to stained glass windows, granite tables to plaster ceiling restorations, the art for mastering many materials was heavily engrained. In his high school years, Alberto apprenticed to his father, working with natural stone and terrazzo, and laying the foundations of a strong work ethic. Alberto’s mother, an accomplished high school teacher, instilled the importance of education. Alberto went on to study a degree in industrial design, while working late into the nights laying, grinding and polishing stone at Westfields across Sydney.
After graduating, Alberto had to undergo tailbone surgery. He went from 17-hour workdays to being connected to a machine and isolated at home. With the handbrake pulled on Alberto’s pursuit to find his true calling, this challenging period would serve as a great time of reflection.
Alberto was seeking an opportunity to mesh his trade with his studies. That day arrived when an image appeared on his laptop of a functional work of art made from high-performance, fibre-reinforced concrete. The sculpted work was the famous erosion sink, by the celebrated concrete furniture maker and pioneer of the industry, Brandon Gore. This discovery would shape Alberto’s future forever.
Alberto applied for a grant to establish his own concrete craft business, polishing concrete floors. Clients who recognised his talent would commission him to design and produce feature concrete and marble pieces.
Seeking inspiration and clarity, Alberto embarked on a journey around the world, immersing himself in the arts of architecture and design. Late one night, he took a chance and sent Brandon his portfolio. He received a reply in minutes inviting Alberto to work with him. One flight and a 43-hour bus ride later, Alberto had set up camp near Gore’s Arkansas home and workshop. There, Alberto worked side-by-side with Brandon, learning valuable skills and developing a deep friendship with his mentor.
After a year, Alberto was able to return to Arkansas to assist Brandon in one of his influential masterclasses on design and fabrication in concrete. At the workshop, he studied with Buddy Rhodes, one of the creators and pioneers of architectural decorative concrete.
From dust comes great beauty
Today, Alberto works through Crosini, his design studio. At Crosini, Alberto turns dust into dreams, constantly pushing the boundaries of architectural concrete and meshing it with other materials.
Collectors, architects and designers continue to be drawn to the studio’s exuberant, confident and stylish aesthetic. They treasure the master craftsman’s ability to fix art and function in timeless designs.

The answer is in the design skills and empathy for the materials that Alberto has developed through years of work, study and experimentation. Yet every piece still draws on the lessons of hard work and commitment to detail that Alberto absorbed while working beside his father.
Every piece by Crosini involves:
- measuring each ingredient to the gram for exquisitely refined results
- fabricating moulds in foam, rubber, resin and wood
- casting concrete in ways that capture its rounded, flowing sculptural qualities
- hours of meticulous hand polishing
The results delight the senses and belie the manual work that forged them.
